Introducing The Stories From The Gordon Craig Project

A late arrival to Stevenage’s new town, The Gordon Craig Theatre opened in 1975. Named after Edward Gordon Craig, the renowned theatre practitioner who was born a mile away, the theatre has become vital to the cultural offering of the area.
The theatre has retained an extensive collection of press-cuttings, posters, photos, flyers and programme.

The collection was entirely uncatalogued, locked away and, until recent tentative local volunteer investigation, it’s been utterly unexplored. We’ve recruited a larger volunteer workforce, working alongside dedicated Stevenage Museum staff, to catalogue and digitise this collection, greatly improving public access through a well-publicised online portal. We’re investing to safely store the archive.

We’ll use the collection as stimulus to uncovering stories from the theatre’s past – exploring and celebrating the role played by theatre in the cultural life of Stevenage. We’ll also host a series of targeted memories sessions with members of the local community living with dementia. The town’s museum will exhibit the selected and amplified engaging social story of the theatre alongside elements of the collection.

As the theatre’s future is being planned, we think it’s a good moment to consider its past.

Stories from The Gordon Craig is a project started in January 2019 led by Stevenage Arts Guild, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, delivered in partnership with The Gordon Craig Theatre and Stevenage Museum.
