As You Like It, July 1982
“As You Like It, to be given a single performance on Saturday 24 July, brings back to the Gordon Craig the outstanding young players of the Phoebus Car Travelling Theatre–comprising past and present scholars of the St. Christopher School, Letchworth. Shakespeare’s witty — and at times, ironically biting — comedy is directed by Margaret Steward, with the emphasis, as ever in these inventive productions, firmly on the clarity and music of the author’s structure and language. Simple but fluid staging evokes the essence of the play’s outdoor freshness, and all who remember these players’ delightful A Midsummer Night’s Dream, seen here a year ago, will want to see this new addition to the repertoire. Strongly recommended — and by no means least to those who have always thought the Bard ‘boring’!”
