AUDREY ROSE (AA) (USA, 1977: director Robert Wise)
MARSHA MASON, ANTHONY HOPKINS. I reckon that Central Park West is defamed by this (to my mind) unscarey drivel about reincarnation, ploddingly directed by Wise, who has made much better movies in his time. It’s another rip-off from the Exorcist gambit, and I think it fails as yet another teenage girl has nightmares and is seized by forces of the devil . . . tra la la . . . ; it’s adapted from his own novel by Frank de Felitta (and in an earlier reincarnation he used to be a very talented documentary producer for NBC-TV). Still, if your hair does turn white, you may with pleasure come and black my eye during the fright-break – but I hasten to add, before any of you take me up, that lots of people think it’s a great movie, so again, perhaps it’s me. Plus short. (programme 132 minutes approx.)
