Bochmann Quartet Music on Mondays :6, April 1979
THE BOCHMANN STRING QUARTET, who give the sixth of this season’s Music on Mondays recitals on Monday 2 April, is already hailed as one of the most exciting young British ensembles to have emerged for many years. Formed in 1976, under the guidance of that King of quartet makers, Sidney Griller, at the Royal Academy of Music, the Quartet has already played to acclaim throughout Britain and in Belgium and Germany; it won joint first place in the 1977 EMI Sutton Prize, and has broadcast in Europe as well as for the BBC. For their Stevenage debut these brilliant young artists have chosen to give Bela Bartok’s Fifth Quartet as the centrepiece of their programme, preceded by Haydn’s Quartet in C major, Op. 54/2, and followed after the interval by the ravishing Quartet in the same key, K465, by Mozart. The Daily Telegraph has spoken of these players’ “unanimity of approach, rich range of tone and sensitivity within it” , and the Guardian referred to “playing of intensity as well as refinement …”. In short, very highly recommended to all music lovers!
