Classical Treasures, July 1997
A sparkling evening of the most popular classical music ever: Rossini’s Overture to the Barber of Seville, Haydn’s Surprise, the opening movements of Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, Beethoven’s Fifth, a suite from Handel’s immortal Water Music, the closing rondo from Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 4 (memorably taken up by Flanders and Swan in the 60s) and the ravishing slow movement of his Clarinet Concerto. As a finale – another piece which gave rise to a 60s hit – Mozart’s unflaggingly tuneful Symphony No. 40. Sheer pleasure!
