Fiddler on the Roof, April 1987
Letchworth Arcadians perform Fiddler on the Rood. The story is set in a small village in Czarist Russia at the turn of the 20th century, and follows the fortunes of Tevye, the milkman, his wide Golde, and their five daughters. The matchmaker has arranged for the eldest, Tzeitel, to mary Lazar Wolf, the butcher but she has other ideas. In the tavern at the celebrations that follow the wedding announcement the inbred hostility between Jews and Russians is temporarily forgotten. The Czarist oppression gradually increases, forcing the villagers to pack their meagre belongings and leave their beloved Anatevka for a life in the New World. Against this background the unforgettable music unfolds, including If I were a Rich Man, Sunset, Matchmaker, and Tradition.
