John Mills, August 1982
“John Mills, who plays at the Gordon Craig for the first time on Sunday 29 August, is known across 3 continents as one of Britain’s finest classical guitarists. A former pupil of both John Williams and the great Segovia, he has chosen a programme of shorter pieces in which baroque music is balanced by the sultry rhythms of Latin America, and the popular by the less familiar. Music by Bach and Handel is juxtaposed, before the interval, with works by Villa Lobos — including the gorgeously tuneful Suite Populaire Bresilienne; and in the second part of the concert favourites like Albeniz’s Rumores de la Caleta and Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Tonadilla on the Name of Segovia are complemented by a group of exciting South American pieces by Reis, Ponce, Barrios and Savio.”
