Mantis Dance Co, March 1987
Mantis present three new works of narrative and symbolist choreography. ‘Scenes from the Life of Beethoven’ is made up of seven choreographed episodes relating to periods and relationships in Beethoven’s life, including love affairs, life at court, working with other musicians and finally, death. Music and design are immediately contemporary whilst maintaining the juxtaposition of modern and classical images.
The second piece called ‘Rate of Exchange’ shows the dancers’ individual qualities emerging from the intricate ensemble work through movement that is both sensual and athletic. The scenes of change and exchange are echoed and accentuated by the music and subtleties of design.
The final piece, ‘Alas, Morris Tuesday, Amen’ tells the story of the Tuesdays’ eldest son, Morris, who is dead. His slightly psychotic mother is numb with grief. Morris Tuesday’s funeral is not a happy event and once the ceremony begins the family’s brave facade becomes impossible to maintain. The conquering of grief for the Tuesday family proves to be a difficult task, but not impossible.
