MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL (A) (GB, 1974; directors Terry Gilliam and Terry Jones)
GRAHAM CHAPMAN, JOHN CLEESE, TERRY GILLIAM, ERIC IDLE, TERRY JONES
Made by the same talented zanies responsible for the wacky TV series. It’s a series of very uneven satiric sketches filmed amongst the castles, lochs and moors of Scotland. The best of them are funny, knockout routines of a high order. ERIC IDLE looks astonishingly like Tyrone Power when dressed in his medieval armour guarding Swamp Castle, and there’s another excruciatingly funny sketch of a “courageous” knight who continues to be pugnacious while gradually being dismembered. Coconut shells provide the sound of horse’s hoofs in this lunatic kingdom. True Python madness.
