Rory Mechanic and the Dipsticks, October 1979
RORY MECHANIC AND THE DIPSTICKS is a new adult comedy with music by Hitchin’s own irrepressible Kirk Foster, whose KADS group make their Stevenage debut in the work’s premiere on 15, 16 and 17 October. In Kirk’s own words, “this smut-rock musical follows the rise, exploitation and eventual fall of Rory, an illiterate mechanic who becomes a legend in his own lunchtime. Overnight the new car-inspired fashion takes over. Spark-plug ear-rings, boiler suits, brake fluid injections and anti-freeze sniffing become the craze, while songs like Swarfega Kisses and Spreading The Smut take Rory to the top of the charts. The show’s strength is enhanced by a brilliant live group featuring ex-Steel-Eye Span’s Nigel Pegrum and Rick Kemp, Flaky Pastry’s Geoff Ide and Britain’s top synthesiser virtuoso, Jon Gillaspie. “Please note that the show is NOT considered suitable for children.
