Stevenage Youth Orchestra, July 1982
“The Stevenage Youth Orchestra, under musical director Paul Wright, present their major annual summer concert on Saturday 17 July. A wide-ranging programme starts with Weber’s tuneful Overture to Oberon, which is followed by Bizet’s enchanting Suite, Jeux d’enfants (=’Children’s Games’). To complete the first half the Orchestra is joined by an old friend, pianist George Walker, for a performance of the vivacious and rather jazz-inflected Piano Concerto No. 2, Op. 101, by Shostakovich. After the interval Walton’s 80th birthday year is marked by a presentation of his rousing Spitfire Prelude and Fugue, and the concert ends with Kodaly’s ever-popular Suite, Hary Janos. Delightful summer evening’s entertainment for all the family!”
