Stevenage Youth Speaks, January 1979
Annual International
The Stevenage Youth Speaks contest, makes its annual appearance in our programme on Sunday 14th January ,is the local heat of a regional competition organised by Rotary International Club District Committee. Teams of three, from local schools, will be competing for a place in the finals, each team having a set period to deliver its prepared discourse on a pre-selected, topical (and usually potentially witty) theme. Judging the contestants will be two top broadcasters, JOHN TIMPSON and BARRY NORMAN, along with the President of the Rotary Club of Stevenage, JOHN RITCHIE; and as a diversion for both themselves and the audience, and as welcome break for the competitors, the two media-men will be conducting a light-hearted interview with the Rotarian during the evening. As a “cabaret “, while the judges confer, the Rotary Club are inviting a local young musician to give a short piano recital, and the whole evening promises to provide an irrefutable answer to those who are always condemning the town`s youth, as well as first class entertainment.
