The Alexander Roy Company, October 1979
THE ALEXANDER ROY LONDON BALLET THEATRE make their Stevenage debut with four performances in the three days beginning Thursday 11 October. Roy himself has long been recognised as one of the most talented dancer/choreographers working in the West, and with his principal ballerina and Associate Director Christina Gallea has built up a Company of superlative standard. Ironically their work has, in recent years, been seen – and universally acclaimed – overseas more than in Britain, where their true worth is long overdue for recognition. The delightful programme offered on this occasion comprises the ever-popular Coppelia (Acts 1 and 11) as well as two of Roy’s own ballets, Masquerade (to Khachaturian’s exuberant music) and Housewarming (to music by the drily witty French composer Francis Poulenc). Strongly recommended both to established dance fans and to those who’ve always wondered whether they’d like ballet, but never got around to trying it! And note the special low price for the Saturday family matinee!
