The Goodbye Girl (A), February 1979
Yet another masterpiece from the pen of NEIL SIMON whose world seems to be almost as idyllic and brightly coloured as the cartoon world of Charlie Brown. In this particular world (Manhattan) muggers exist, but only as faintly comic devices to allow the hero to exhibit his magnanimity. The story about Paula (MARSHA MASON) a dancer and Elliot (RICHARD DREYFUS) an aspiring actor, is both poignant and funny. The two decide to share her flat in a state of armed neutrality while she auditions for dancing jobs and he rehearses for an off-Broadway production of a homosexual version of Richard III.
