The Last Waltz (U), May 1979
Pop Film USA 1978 Director Martin Scorcese
Filmed in 35 mm by a team of seven cameramen, and employing a 24-track recording system to produce the admirable Dolby stereo soundtrack, the Last Waltz is on the one hand a sleek and subtle documentary that not only knocks sideways all previous efforts from Monterey Pop to Gimme Shelter by way of Woodstock, but is less concerned with exhibitionism (on the part of the performers, audience or film-makers) than with the music itself. It is a beautiful film, beautifully photographed. Apart from THE BAND, appearances are made by BOB DYLAN, JONI MITCHELL, NEIL DIAMOND, MUDDY WATERS, ERIC CLAPTON, RINGO STARR, DR. JOHN and many, many others. A film not to be missed by any music lover.
