Having heard news of the infidelities of Roman wives, Prince Tarquinius becomes obsessed with the desire to make an attempt upon the virtue of the sole exception, Lucretia, wife of one of his generals. Tarquinius claims hospitality at Lucretia’s home and later enters her room and rapes her. Unable to bear the burden of her shame, next day Lucretia kills herself.
