The Stevenage Symphony Orchestra, October 1983
The Stevenage Symphony Orchestra, under Musical Director Peter Wigfield, give the first of their new season’s concerts on Saturday 8 October. The Overture to Johann Strauss’ operetta Die Fledermaus gets the evening off to a dazzling start, and then there is a rare chance to hear the Piano Concerto by one of England’s most neglected composers, John Ireland, with the very distinguished English music specialist Eric Parkin as soloist. After the interval comes one of the most popular cornerstones of the symphonic repertoire, Sibelius’ towering Second Symphony.
