The War Game (X), August 1982
“Under the auspices of the Stevenage CND, here at last is a chance for local people to see Watkins’ brilliant but scarifying short feature about Britain in the aftermath of nuclear war. Originally made for BBC TV, but remaining unscreened to this day on account of its horrifying impact (utterly factual though it may be), the film was nonetheless subsequently honoured with both British and American Oscars, and prizes throughout the world for its contribution to peace. In documentary style, using amateur actors, it’s a stark glimpse of what could — not might, but would — happen if someone, somewhere, ‘pressed the button.’ Supported by cartoon Pretend You’ll Survive (A), and by live addresses. (Programme expected to run 100 minutes, approx. finishing 9.40pm)”.
