Tosca, February 1999
Set in Rome in 1800, Puccini’s powerful verismo opera takes us into a police state under the merciless grasp of the chief of police, Scarpia. Cavarodossi, a painter and an activist against the regime, is in love with Tosca, a famous opera singer, who is herself the object of Scarpia’s sadistic infatuation. The ensuing three-way struggle – involving torture, murder and execution – leads to the opera’s dramatic climax.
Sung in English with chamber orchestra accompaniment.
