Women Without Men, November 1988
Spring Productions Presents Women without Men.
A Play by Kathleen J. Smith
From the author of LWT’s WITHIN THESE WALLS and THE BRONTE STORY, comes WOMEN WITHOUT MEN, a raw and powerful new play interspersed with moments of high comedy, set in the long-term wing of a women’s prison. The Governor and her Assistant disagree about paroling Delia Galpin, a child murderess who claims to be a reformed character. Woven round this are the stories of Monkey, a drug-pushing lesbian, Miss Waring, a new officer learning the dangers of dealing with long-term prisoners, and a male officer and prisoner who visit the wing.
WOMEN WITHOUT MEN pulls no punches and could not have been written without Kathleen Smith’s knowledge of prison life, learned when she was Assistant Governor of Holloway Prison.
